When Vincent van Gogh moves to Paris in 1886, with the aim of breaking through as an artist, he gets to know an avant-garde group of artists, including Paul Gauguin. But Van Gogh only encounters more misunderstanding and rejection and eventually leaves for Arles in the south of France, hoping to build a new life. In his quest for acceptance, however, Van Gogh loses himself more and more in a world of illness and depression.
