(2015) 108 mins 15 Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard star in director Justin Kurzel's adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy about madness, paranoia, ambition and regicide. This is a serious and very Scottish interpretation of the play, with the landscape providing an austere backdrop for the brutal and bloodthirsty story. The text is trimmed (no Porter) and built upon rather than forced to serve a gimmicky concept, which allows the cast to mine the characters to great dramatic depth. Fassbender imbues Macbeth with a damaged soul even before murder crosses his mind, and Cotillard's Lady Macbeth is driven as much by desperation as by ambition. This is a wounded husband and wife (the film opens with a child's funeral) for whom there can be no respite, in this superbly accomplished rendition of one of the Bard's grimmest tragedies.
